Afar is a brand of Village Industry, a textile factory based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The company started operations in 2004 as a knitting plant and is now doing printing, sewing, dyeing and finishing. What makes Village Industry unique is its capacity to process fabrics and leather combining sophisticated technology and high quality natural raw materials.
Behind Afar lies four generations of knowledge in textile production. The story starts in Italy in 1878. The mother company, called Figli di Michelangelo Calamai, was the first in Italy to adopt mechanical spinning technology driven by personal water turbines. By the 1930s the company became the third largest producer of blankets in Europe, employing more than 3,000 employees. The blankets were made from recycled fibers from rugs and disposed garments.
More than a decade ago, part of the production was moved to Addis Ababa, together with it the rich tradition and experience the Company gained in more than a century of activity.
