  • Screen printing or silk screen printing is a very versatile technique developed by the Chinese around 1000 AD by using a silk mesh to control the passage of inks and reproduce shapes on fabrics and paper.

Silk has been replaced by polyester and the use of photosensitive gels has made life much easier to printers, but the techniques have remained the same for centuries.

At Afar, screen printing is done by hand by artisans using wooden and metal frames and hand squeegees.
